Summer is quickly approaching! The days are getting longer, and the weather is finally getting warmer. At Potomac River Running, we think summer is the perfect time to get moving and be active. No longer can you use the excuse that it is too cold outside or that it got dark too early. Now is the time to set some goals, get outside, and enjoy being active. Read on to learn about 5 ways you can be active this summer.
Go for a Walk
Summer provides us with many opportunities to go out for walks. When it comes to walking, the options are endless. Start your day off on the right foot by walking a loop around your neighborhood each morning. Others may enjoy a walk each night after dinner. Weekends are a great time to get outside and find new places to walk beyond your usual routes. The northern Virginia/Washington DC area has so many different trails to explore. Walking the dog or going on walks with your family members are great ways to stay in shape this summer with the company of others. Remember, there is no specific amount of time that you must walk. Even a 5-10 minute walk each day is good for you!
Running is a great way to stay active this summer. Whether it’s one mile per day or 40 miles per week, set a goal for yourself. Get out there and enjoy the beauty of summer running. While racing may look a little bit different right now, sign up for a Potomac River Running virtual race to get you motivated. A virtual race is a fun experience because it is flexible, and you can really make it your own. You pick the time of day and course and we send you a bib, shirt, and medal. No pressure! Go for a personal best and then upload your results to see how you stack up against other racers.
Ride a Bike
This low impact form of exercise is a great activity for the whole family. The W&OD is the perfect trail to bike on this summer. This 45-mile paved trail runs from Arlington all the way to Purcellville. Hop on anywhere and you are sure to have a scenic ride. Looking for a summer challenge? See if you can bike the entire 45 mile trail in one day! Just be sure you have someone to pick you and your bike up at the end!
Play with Your Kids or a Pet
Being active doesn’t have to be complicated! Simply playing with your kids or pet is a great way to get the blood flowing! Get outside and play tag or catch with your kids or grab a tennis ball to play fetch with your dog. Getting outside and feeling the sun on your face will be an instant mood booster. Your kids or dog will surely keep your heart pumping during this outdoor play session.
Do an At-Home Workout
You may be wondering, how can I still be active on those rainy summer days? It’s easy! Pick a virtual workout to do from the comfort of your own home. This could be HIIT, a core workout, yoga, Pilates, and more! YouTube is a great source of home workout videos. In addition, a lot of the local fitness studios are currently offering classes via Zoom. Working out from home is flexible and stress-free. Get your heart rate up without ever having to leave your living room!
Summer is a great time to be active. Being active is very beneficial to our physical and mental wellbeing. Even if it is just for 10 minutes, get out there and walk, run, bike, or play with your kids or pets. If it’s raining, you can still workout inside!
