Runners on your mark, get set, woah! We know it’s been a while since you’ve heard those words. In fact, for many of us, it’s been a year or more since our last in-person race.
As the weather gets warmer and in-person races return, it’s time to shake things out and get ready to toe the line. Here are some tips and tricks to get ready to return to racing.
Are you prepared?
Let’s be honest, for many of us it’s been a while since we have trained for a race. Last year left us with cancelled races, changes to our daily schedule, and lots of unknowns. Your training may have been spotty or you may have forgotten all about your training plan altogether. Many of us opted for daily runs just to stay sane. Once you register for a race you want to make sure you are prepared. Depending on your amount of base training and where you are picking up from, you may want to allow some training extra time. In addition, go easy on yourself. After all, training too hard or too quick can lead to unnecessary injuries that will set you back. Find a training plan that suits you for your upcoming race(s) and give yourself proper time to prepare. Need a little extra motivation? Consider joining a training group. =PR=Training Programs is offering a number of new sessions this April. Find one that fits your needs.
Are you equipped?
As you start to train and prepare for your race make sure you are well equipped with the right gear for race day. Remember, race day is not just any old ordinary day especially when it’s been a while. A few weeks out, do a gear check to make sure you have everything you need.
First and foremost, make sure you have a good pair of sneakers and that you allow time to train in them. Race day is not the time to try a new pair of shoes. Head into your local =PR= store before you race so that you have some time to get used to your new shoes. Interested in running for a personal record? Consider trying a pair of racing flats or performance sneakers for race day!
Socks and Sports Bras
Make sure you have a good pair of performance socks for race day and a backup pair. We all know that socks are the first thing to go missing in the washing machine! Check out our collection of moisture-wicking socks that will keep your feet dry and blister-free all race long!
For ladies, take a look at your sports bra and make sure you have a fresh one for race day. An old sports bra can slow you down and cause unnecessary discomfort on race day. Did you know that a poorly fitting or worn out sports bra can add the equivalent of a mile onto a marathon race?
Nutrition and Hydration
Depending on the length of your race and the time of year, it’s essential to consider how you will stay hydrated and fueled for your race. Practice with both nutritional items and your hydration plan throughout your training to avoid unnecessary surprises on race day. We suggest trying a variety of different nutritional items (ex: gels, chews, sports beans) in order to find which works best for your digestion. As far as hydration goes, plan on carrying your own hydration especially if you are racing during the summer. Carrying a hydration belt or pack helps you stay hydrated throughout the race instead of just drinking at the water stops.
It isn’t a necessity to go out and get a brand new outfit for race day but you know the old saying “look good, feel good.” Treat yourself to a new race day outfit and feel good as you race for the first time in a while. An added bonus… just think how good you’ll look in all those race day photos!
Are you race ready?
You’ve trained, you got the gear, now it’s time to toe the line and put your race face on! Since it’s been a long time, you might feel a range of emotions about your first race. Feelings of happiness, excitement, and even anxiety are totally normal. As you return to racing, be confident in your training and yourself and set realistic expectations and goals. There’s nothing wrong with allowing your first race back to be a dust buster or a fun run and a time to catch up with friends! Or maybe you trained hard all throughout 2020 and are ready for a shiny new PR! No matter what your goals are for race day, know that it’s going to be great to be back at it!
