Exploring New Places

Fall is the perfect time to explore new places with crisp cool temperatures and picture perfect surroundings. You’ll want to stay longer, soak up the day, and of course log a few additional miles. Whether it’s a new place to visit or a longtime favorite, it will feel new and exciting with the changing colors of the leaves, fresh cool air, and a sense of adventure. So grab your shoes, lace up, and get ready to go a little longer on these local favorites from our brand reps.

Shoe Rep from Altra – Kyle Northrop

Kyle’s Pick: The Gerry Connolly Cross Country Trail, Best Known as the CCT.

Here’s what Kyle had to say about one of his favorite places to explore in the area:

“Over 40 miles long, the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail spans the entirety of Fairfax county. My favorite sections around Lake Accotink in Springfield have been my training grounds for the past 2 years. The Lake Accotink loop is a hair under 4 miles and a mix of trail and road, perfect for someone wanting to try trails for the first time. Heading north a mile on the GCCCT to Wakefield park connects you to some amazing single tracks if you looking for a more rugged trail experience. One time on the GCCCT, I found $100! Make sure as well to hit up Rawr Sushi in Springfield on your way back to the beltway, it’s a must try!”

Shoe Rep from ON – Mark Wood

Mark’s Pick: The Bluemont Junction Trail

Here’s what Mark had to say about one of his favorite places to explore in the area:

“In the Arlington area, it doesn’t get much better than starting out on the Bluemont Junction Trail for your run. Replacing an old Railroad Line constructed in 1912, the Bluemont uses segments of the W&OD and Custis Trail to create a 3.2 mile loop ending near the Ballston Metro Station; just a short walk away from Potomac River Running where store manager, Phil Le can help with all of your nutritional needs. Pro Tip: Park your car on Wilson Blvd before hopping on the trail, so you can enjoy the area’s #1 ranked, AVPN certified pizza at Pupatella when you’re done with your run. The signature oven was built with bricks using volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius, and arrived from Naples via sea ship.”

Shoe Rep from Saucony – Zach Opdenaker

Zach’s Pick: The C&O Canal Trail

Here’s what Zach had to say about one of his favorite places to explore in the area:

“My favorite local place to run is the C&O Canal Trail. With endless miles in either direction it is a great run for any distance or pace! I especially love the soft, crushed gravel on days where my legs are a little more beat up. The C&O has the best views of the Potomac that I can think of and provide some picturesque photo opportunities. The JFK 50 mile race even uses the C&O for 26.2 straight miles of their race! The Ride 13 is my shoe of choice on the C&O, it handles the crushed gravel well, and will take me whatever pace or distance I want!”

Shoe Rep From New Balance – Hannah Griffin

Hannah’s Pick: The National Mall

Here’s what Hannah had to say about one of her favorite places to explore in the area:

“The national mall is the perfect place to log some miles while enjoying beautiful and historic scenery. My favorite route is from Potomac River Running’s F street location where I head toward the national mall. On my run I’ll see the National Archives, which houses the constitution, before hitting the softer surfaces toward the Capitol building. After taking in the views I head toward the Washington Monument (where I snag a few fun pics) before heading toward the war memorials and on to the Lincoln memorial where I typically take a breather at the reflecting pool. From here I either loop back to the store or, for some additional miles when the weather is nice, loop the tidal basin. Pro tip: check this route out in the Spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom! Post run I usually hit up shake shack for a much deserved post run shake or malt – all in my New Balance 880’s!”
