Earth Day is only a few weeks away, but it’s never too early to start celebrating! We suggest celebrating Earth Day everyday. Whether you walk or run, make your miles greener this month. Here are a few simple ways you can “go green” as you get your miles in.
Run, walk, bike, and move! As the good people of Boston would say “Pahk the cah” and opt to take some trips on foot or bike. The less miles driven in the car make for a much more eco-friendly way to travel. When making trips to the grocery store, nearby errands, or visiting local friends, choose to commute by foot. Think of it as an opportunity to log more miles throughout your day as an added bonus!
Run and Walk Local
Adventure awaits in new locations but consider running and walking local first. Do you drive to a park or trail to get your miles in? If so, consider finding routes that are nearby to eliminate extra miles or trips in your car. The less miles in the car allows for more time and miles logged on foot!
The next time you are in the market for new footwear and gear consider purchasing items that are made from sustainable fabrics and recycled items. Each brand has their own sustainable initiatives to make their products and manufacturing processes as eco-friendly as possible. For example, Brooks has focused on using more sustainable materials in their footwear over the past seven years. By 2018, they were using 44% Bluesign® certified materials. ASICS has great success in reducing CO2 emissions at their factories. When comparing levels to 2015, there has been a 27.9% reduction in C02 emissions per pair of ASICS footwear. On Running has even created a 100% recyclable running shoe made from castor beans and a single cut of fabric! These are just a few examples of how brands are working hard to create green products.
Take Small Steps
Make a promise to take small steps moving forward to live a greener lifestyle. Just remember a little goes a long way. Here are just a few things you can do daily to make your miles greener and do good for Mother Earth:
– Swap your disposable water bottle for a reusable water bottle. As the weather gets warmer, hydration is essential! We have plenty of options when it comes to reusable bottles!
– When you shop, bring a reusable bag! Instead of getting a bag from every store you shop at that eventually just gets thrown away, bring your own bags that you can reuse over and over again. Stay tuned for a Potomac River Running branded reusable shopping bag coming soon!
– Recycle old footwear. Did you know that =PR= takes old footwear? Drop off your old shoes when you ready for a new pair at any of our 9 locations and we will take care of the rest! Potomac River Running donates them to Got Sneakers. Through their shoe recycling program, Got Sneakers has stopped 60 million pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere and has recycled/reused 2 million pairs of shoes!
– Did you know that each year Americans create billions of pounds of clothing waste? We know how fun it is to buy new running/walking outfits! Before tossing your older clothes, see if you can donate them to a local shelter or Goodwill. Or maybe you can even wear them as pajamas! Instead of throwing old clothing away, get creative and figure out ways it can be reused.
See how simple it is to make your miles more green? It’s almost as easy as running or walking! Now go on and go green!
