Whether you are totally new to running, coming back from a long time away, or you want to challenge yourself with a personal goal, you should consider the many benefits of training with a group. Here are just a few great reasons why we love group runs:
1. Birds of a feather flock together. When you join one of Potomac River Running’s group training programs such as Running 101, Running 201 or the Summer/Fall Distance plan, you’re going to be surrounded by like-minded people with similar interests and goals. By meeting up 1-2 times per week, you’ll establish the “built-in training partners” that can make the journey to your goal more enjoyable.
2. The force is with you. We’ve seen it with every group we’ve ever coached; there is something magical about the Power of the Group. Perhaps it’s an internal gravitational pull that you need to motivate you on days when sticking with your training plan is challenging. When the urge to dodge a workout hits, your thoughts will instantly turn to your “accountability partners” in your running group, and how your presence will be missed. Sometimes just knowing your running friends are most likely going to be out there getting it done is all it takes to get you out the door.
How does it feel to show up to your group training run and collect the high fives and “good to see you” smiles from your running buddies? It’s pretty amazing. Your other life responsibilities can test you all day, but when you make that group run, it’s suddenly YOUR time to do something great.
3. Experts to guide you. Our group training programs feature an all-star team of trained, experienced running coaches to ensure that the 16, 18 or 20 weeks you’re under their leadership will be one of the best experiences of your life!
There’s no greater “bummer” than having a dream running goal or race end up unfulfilled because you tried to go it alone and ended up over-training, under-training, or in the worst scenario, finding yourself injured or “burned out” because you didn’t have the proven knowledge, running tools, techniques, and wise advice to prevent these outcomes.
4. It’s often the “Hard” that makes it “Great.” When you share a common goal with other runners, you spend weeks and months building the miles and notching new accomplishments together. It’s the greatest thrill to flash the “I’ve done it” smile as the finish line nears and you have an entire team of people with whom you can share your joy! Not every training day or race will feel “effortless,” to you, but committing to a group training program can mean the difference between dreaming of a big goal and actually making it your reality.
“What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it! Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” – Goethe
