We embrace trail running at Potomac River Running, and here are just a few reasons why we think you also may want to “mix things up” a bit and consider hitting the trail:
It Strengthens Your Run and Improves Technique:
Shorter strides, landing mid-foot, and a faster stride rate (or “turnover”) actually requires less energy and improves your efficiency. This is a technique that we teach in all of our training programs and running form clinics, and trail running helps you apply it with every step. As you are constantly tackling uneven terrain, you’re going to be landing much more on your mid-foot than your forefoot, and the benefits will carry over into your road running and strengthen your good form.
Softer Surfaces: Easier on the Body:
By running on the softer surfaces trail running can provide, and avoiding asphalt or concrete, you’re reducing the impact your foot strike has on the body. Lower forces being placed on the lower leg means less chance for injury. You’re also going to have the added benefit of building lower leg strength, which means a more stable run. All of which translates to a more powerful, stable, yet effortless road run.
Reconnect with Nature:
Most of us at Potomac River Running live in or near the bustling Washington, DC metro area, and we love the opportunities presented by one of the largest, busiest cities in the world. But sometimes we yearn to take our running to new places. Perhaps we yearn for a “mental break” from the stress of daily life. Fortunately, our area also boasts some of the best trail running anywhere. Running or walking without the pressure of time and pace on a stunning and challenging trail heightens all of our senses and reconnects us with the joy of movement and the beauty of our natural environment.
If you’ve never tried trail running, or you’re a veteran trail runner, our new series of trail runs that kick off in April are open to all levels. We will offer guided runs of 30 minute, 60 minute and 90 minutes. Fun run leaders, post-run snacks, mud, dirt and grime await you! All of our trail runs are FREE, but we need you to please register in advance so we can support your run.
