Runner Full Name: Kimberly Dawn Yeo
Age Category: 50-54
Favorite PR Race: Celebrate Fairfax 5K
First Race: Frosty 5K 2016 (In Fairfax. I actually ran a Turkey Trot in Myrtle Beach in 2016 a few weeks before.)
Favorite Race Memory: Cheering on my daughters when they crossed the finish line in the Frosty 5K.
How did you get started running? My oldest daughter asked if I would do a Foam Glow run with her (neither of us were runners), so I decided I’d better start trying to get in shape and start running. I never did complete the Couch to 5K app by the time of the run.
Favorite Running Event/Distance? I am definitely a 5k kind of girl and I love races with some good bling. (I’m a sucker for a great looking tech shirt.)
What is your favorite part about running and or racing? I love being able to get away from everything and having time to myself to think while listening to some good tunes. I’ve tried running with groups, but it’s definitely not as freeing.
Who is your biggest cheerleader/supporter? My dog! If I’m out running in the neighborhood and he sees me from the window, he goes berserk! If my husband is out walking him and they see me, he will pull my husband to try and get to me. Unfortunately, his 14 lb frame isn’t keen to run too far of a distance, or else I’d take him out with me. Snickers will go about a block and then he’s quite happy to stop.
What is your Spirit Animal? Why? I’ve never really thought of myself as having a spirit animal, so I took three online quizzes (no clue why – the first was a fluffy kitten and I was happy with that). I was hoping they’d each reveal the same thing, but I got a fluffy kitten, bear and sea turtle. We’ll go with fluffy kitten.
What is your life’s motto? Words to live by? My dad always used to say “It is what it is” and I’ve adopted that same saying. I try not to worry about things that I can’t control or change.
3 Fun Facts About Yourself.
- I love love love spicy foods. (Indian is my favorite and I think my favorite restaurant likes to challenge me on exactly how hot I can take it. So far, my stomach has survived so I consider that a win for me.)
- My favorite color has always been purple ever since I can remember and I used to love Donny Osmond because it was his favorite, too!
- I love to run in hot weather! I am not one of those people that will get up at o’dark thirty to get in a run while it’s cooler. I am also a bit afraid to run in the dark because I’m the type that would trip on a twig and fall.
Favorite places to run or train:
- Anywhere flat or with very little hills!
- I love to run along a stretch of the A1A in Florida that has nice wide sidewalks very close to the beach.
- I’ve really enjoyed running while visiting my MIL’s house in the UK because the air is very fresh and cool, even in the summer. I get a lot of miles in when we go visit.
Top 3 things to have for a race or run: (Must Have Items)
- My sunglasses (I prefer Goodrs.)
- My Aftershokz and phone for my tunes.
- My Garmin (I’m obsessed with how far I’ve gone and my speed.)
Your last run/walk was: Today!
Your last race was: the virtual Run Your Heart Out (in person was the New Year’s Day 2020)
What advice would you have for new runners? Give it six months before deciding running isn’t for you. I was not a fan four months in, but a friend told me to stick with it until six and by then I was hooked! I think it helped that I ran initially on my treadmill while doing the Couch to 5K because it was during the winter and I hate cold weather so I would have quit quickly had I started running outside during the winter. I prefer to run outside now, but will happily do some binge watching of tv if I’m on the treadmill (watched the entire Friday Night Lights series that way).
Tell us a bit about your =PR= story? How’d you get started?I had done a few PRR races and thought the stores seemed like cool places to work. I bought my first pair of running shoes from the Springfield location when it was Metro Run & Walk. I also did a running clinic which really helped me focus on my gait and cadence. During winter break in 2019 I saw a PRR post come up on my feed on Facebook about looking for employees, so I decided to send an email expressing my interest and how I had developed a passion for running. When I actually went in for an interview, it turns out that they hadn’t officially been looking for someone and it was an old posting, but my story made them want to bring me in. I take that to be fate, because here I am over a year later and loving working at PRR part-time! The only bad thing is I tend to sometimes spend more than I earn in the store! LOL
