Running and racing is a family affair for the DeRocco brothers. If you have ever run a =PR= Race then you are bound to have seen this sibling trio out on the race course. The DeRocco brothers are avid runners and treat their race schedule as a family reunion.
Meet The DeRocco Brothers: Frank, Vinnie, and Pat (and Older Sister Gina)
The DeRocco brothers grew up being active and competing in a variety of sports but the running bug started with middle brother Vinnie. Vinnie started running in high school and soon after younger brother Pat was inspired by his brother’s success and caught the running bug too. Pat started running in middle school and was sought after by Vinnie’s coaches with the hopes that running ran in the DeRocco blood, and it did! Oldest brother Frank got a later start with his running career, he would often jump into a random 5K or 10K here and there. In 2014, Pat, Vinnie, and Frank lost their father unexpectedly. At this time Frank went all in on the running scene persevering through those difficult times. The three brothers have an older sister, Gina. Gina was the first sibling to take on the marathon.
Other DeRocco’s… Is there A Next Generation?
The next generation of the DeRocco family is already out and about on the racing and running scene. Frank and his wife have two son’s Frankie and Leo both have participated in some of the kid fun runs at =PR= Races. This June, Frankie (age 7) will be aiming to complete his first 5K for the Virtual Run with Dad race. Vinnie and his wife, just welcomed the newest member of the DeRocco family, 10 week old James! James has already joined his Mom and Dad on a number of stroller runs logging miles on the WO&D trail. Last but not least, Gina’s children, Nicole, Ava, and Joey have all participated in PR Races.
Speaking of PR Races… What is your favorite race?
Every summer the DeRocco Brothers have a family tradition in their hometown. They run the Utica Boilermaker 15K! The race is in their childhood neighborhood and home city. Their favorite part of running the Utica Boilermaker 15K is right before a hill on mile 3, mother Donna DeRocco is out cheering for the brothers as they run by! Every single year, she’s at that spot, and it makes the race all that more special. Fun fact about their hometown, it is the home of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame. In addition to the Utica Boilermaker 15K, the DeRooco brother’s had a tough time picking just one of their favorite PR Races. It was a tie between the Glory Days 5K and the Parks 10K.

What’s Your Best Race Memory?
Frank: Having the opportunity to have my 7 and 4-year-old jump onto the course to cross the finish line with me.
Vinnie: Running the 2019 Birthday Bash 5k alongside Pat and Frank in the extreme heat.
Pat: Anytime I watch a sibling set a PR is the best. For myself, I’ll go back to high school with my 4x800m team. We worked hard for two years to try to break our school record held by our coach, which had stood for 20 years. On our last track meet of our senior year, me as the anchor leg, we finally broke the record and now that record still stands going on 21 years!
Who is your biggest cheerleader?
Frank: My wife, Nicole. Without her support, I would not have been able to accomplish all that I have in the sport, so far. Special recognition to my mother and siblings who have also been incredibly supportive and encouraging.
Vinnie: My wife has always been there for me, I’d be nothing without her. Mom always was and still is a huge supporter as well. And my brothers continue their support as we keep each other going.
Pat: My Mom, growing up she was at every race, and from afar she’s the first to check the results!
What’s a Fun Fact About Your Siblings?
Fun Facts From Frank: Vinnie used to have hair and was an extra on an episode of Veronica Mars when he lived in San Diego. Pat also used to have hair and about 10 years ago he won the gold medal for winning the 800 in the Virginia Commonwealth Games. He beat out a few Olympians in the event! Gina and her husband own a Title Boxing location at One Loudoun.
Fun Facts From Vinnie: Pat is a great poet. He has written so many amazing rhymes, and has also been the chosen one to write the Eulogy many times as family members pass. It’s very impressive what he does. Frank is an avid fisherman and used to handcraft his own fishing lures. His company is called Delures. Some quality stuff too!
Fun Facts From Pat: Frank was Arlington County Teacher of The Year in 2017. Vinnie lived in San Diego for 8 years, and was on an episode of Veronica Mars! Our sister Gina is the strongest of us all.
What is your Spirit Animal?
Frank: American Bald Eagle. Not sure if it is my spirit animal but how can you go wrong with the Bald Eagle? They are fierce, loyal, and great to watch.
Vinnie: Pit Viper, why not?
Pat: A Boxer Dog. You will not see more joy from me outside of being around a Boxer. The energy, fun and goofiness all match. I had one for 10 years, shout out to Tyson!
What is your life motto/words to live by?
Pat: To Keep on Keepin’ on, but I’d also say in this life you’ve got to have faith, because you either stand for something or fall for everything.

Frank: The competition and testing my limits.
T H I S O R T H A T
Distance – Long or Short
Frank: Long I prefer 10K’s and 10 milers.
Vinnie: I’m always down for a long run but sometimes shorter ones get the job done too. As long as I’m getting it in.
Pat: On the Track its the 800m, off the track I like the 5k, but the 10k is growing on me!
Post Race Snack – Banana or Bagel
Frank: I know I should eat after a race but I find it difficult. Ice cold water or Gatorade.
Vinnie: Pizza is always the best post race snack for me. And beer if available.
Pat: Whatever is there, usually two bags of gummy fruit snacks, a bagel and water. When I’m smart I’ll drink Endurox or some protein/carb recovery drink.
Time of Day – Rise and Grind or Night Owl
Vinnie: Nighttime is the right time.
Pat: Changes throughout a week, but overall “Nighttime is the right time”
