Runner(s) Full Name: Pam
Age Category: 20-29
Favorite PR Race: I am currently training for my first races! I anticipate being ready for a 5k race by late summer or early fall. I hope to be ready for a 10k by the end of 2021. I am keeping my eyes peeled for both virtual races and non-virtual 5ks in the DMV.
First Race: Stay tuned!
Favorite Race Memory: I haven’t entered a race yet, so I don’t really have a favorite race memory. I used to participate in charitable walks and always enjoyed the sense of community and camaraderie. Whether competing or not, one thing I’ve noticed is runners and walkers are always very supportive when on the trail!
How did you get started running? I started a weight loss and fitness journey in the summer of 2020 in anticipation of my upcoming wedding. I started walking as one of my main forms of exercise. Over the last couple of months, I’ve lost more than 30 lbs! Losing 30 lbs has inspired me to continue to explore different types of fitness and to begin running. I started running and training for my first 5k using the C25K (Couch to 5k) App on my phone. Some other resources I use to train and motivate myself include Runner’s World Magazine and the Not Your Average Runner Podcast. Early on in my running journey, I decided to stop by PR Vienna in order to ensure I had the proper gear and shoes.
Favorite Running Event/Distance? I don’t have a favorite race (yet), but my preferred distance to run is between 1 and 3 miles most days. I find that this distance keeps me motivated, but does not lead to exhaustion, frustration, or injury. I hope to continue training and run longer distances in the future.
What is your favorite part about running and or racing? One of the things I love most about running is having the opportunity to explore different neighborhoods and parks. I run different routes as frequently as possible to avoid monotony, challenge my body, and experience new places. I also enjoy the confidence and joy I feel after finishing a tough run or hitting a new personal record!
Who is your biggest cheerleader/supporter? My biggest supporters and cheerleaders are my fiance, Patrick, and my family. They inspire me to keep pushing myself and strive to live a healthier and happier life. I am immensely grateful for them.
What is your Spirit Animal? Why? My spirit animal for running is an elephant. The elephant’s running capabilities are frequently underestimated. Sometimes I underestimate myself, but I am a runner and getting faster every day.
What is your life’s motto? Words to live by? “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
3 Fun Facts About Yourself:
- I am a “fur mom” to two rescued cats, Sammie and Jennie.
- I have a Master’s of Public Policy Degree.
- I met my fiancé in middle school and we started dating in high school. We stayed together through college and grad school, despite attending universities in different states.
Top 3 things to have for a race or run: (must-have items)
- Sun protection. I specifically recommend sunscreen and a visor.
- My running belt. It’s not anything too fancy but I use it to carry my phone, spare key, and water
- Proper running shoes and socks! I wear Altra shoes and Balega Hidden Comfort socks. Both were recommended to me by the friendly associates at PR Vienna.
Your last run/walk was: Was my best yet! I did an easy 1.5 mile run near Vienna metro and hit a personal record.
What advice would you have for a new runner or walker? The definition of “run” is to “move at a speed faster than a walk.” If you are moving faster than the pace you walk, congratulations, you’re running! It does not matter how fast you are but that you are trying your best and putting one foot in front of another. Track your time, speed, and distance to see improvement, but remember to only compete against yourself.
If I wasn’t running or walking I’d be… Reading or watching Netflix
My favorite post run, walk, or race meal is… Ice cream! It helps me cool off. I also usually drink Nuun to rehydrate after hot summer runs.
