This month’s customer spotlight is Travis Welch. Over the last year, Travis completed a number of our =PR= monthly challenges and virtual races. Like most of us, he is eager to return to the thrill of live, in-person racing soon. Travis has completed a number of races over the years. One of his favorite ones was with his son, a student at Rock Ridge High School. Travis got the chance to run alongside his son during his first 5K. Learn more about Travis in this month’s spotlight.
Runner(s) Full Name: Travis Welch
Age Category: 48
Favorite PR Race: Super Hero 5K (2017)
First Race: Yankee Doodle 5K (1992)
Favorite Race Memory: Considering our last year, my favorite memory is the whole in-person race experience. Arriving early to warm up and seeing who I know or maybe meeting someone new. Spectators and other runners cheering you on, whether they know you or not. Excited for in-person racing to come back!
How did you get started running? I started running in college with a friend and she encouraged me to talk to her coach about joining the Cross Country team. I did and ended up running varsity Cross Country and Track for Indiana Wesleyan University (Marion, IN) from 1992-1995 and have loved it ever since.
Favorite Running Event/Distance? I love 5K races; however, I am starting to really like 10K’s as well.
What is your favorite part about running and/or racing? No matter what your age, you always have an opportunity to push yourself and improve with each and every run.
Who is your biggest cheerleader/supporter? My girlfriend, Jane.
What is your Spirit Animal? Why? I guess I would say The Road Runner (beep! beep!) Always smiling, not so talkative, and frequently on the run.
What is your life’s motto? Keep moving forward!
Words to live by? “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” – Steve Prefontaine

What advice would you have for new runner or walker? Make sure you get fitted for appropriate running shoes and go at your own pace. Stretching is important and listen to your body. Push yourself when you can and take one rest day a week. Find yourself a local running group, or even virtual group to help with motivation and accountability. Challenge yourself, but most of all HAVE FUN! Running is about the journey and experience, not always the finish lines!
Share a favorite memory from a race: Running with my son, Ethan! It was the Rock Ridge Color Run at his school to meet the 5K PE requirement. This was his first 5K and as a father, I had such a sense of pride to train and run with him during that race!
